Description

Abstract. Due to the increasing instability of marriages, the importance of marital therapy is growing. It plays a crucial role in providing couples with the necessary support and tools to navigate their challenges and strengthen marital relationships. This paper aims to present marital therapy in private counseling centers in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Using semi-structured interviews, the paper explores the professional experiences of psychotherapists (N=10) to gain insights into the challenges and issues facing marriages in Bosnian-Herzegovinian society, as well as the ways they help in resolving marital crises. Research has shown that marital therapy is complex and requires significant expertise, yet its progress in Bosnia and Herzegovina is hampered by systemic challenges, inconsistent standards, and resource limitations. Cultural barriers, such as lack of information and prejudices against professionals, along with low motivation among couples to seek help, highlight the need for better service organization, multisectoral collaboration, and institutional promotion. The professional experiences of psychotherapists presented in the paper can contribute to a better understanding of the emerging changes in marital realities and are crucial in planning interventions aimed at preserving Bosnian-Herzegovinian families. Keywords: marital therapy, psychotherapists, private counseling centers, Bosnia and Herzegovina
